Liverpool 'face big bill' if Darwin Nunez starts one more match this season

Liverpool would reportedly have to fork out millions of pounds in add-ons if Darwin Nunez starts any of their five remaining matches this season.

The Uruguayan has been virtually bench-bound since scoring in the 3-1 win over Southampton in early March, and that could prove to be his last goal for the Reds amid speculation over his club future.

Nunez set Liverpool back an initial £64million when he signed from Benfica in the summer of 2022.

Of the additional £21.5m in potential bonuses agreed between the two clubs, the Portuguese outfit received £4.3m when he surpassed 10 combined starts in the Premier League and Champions League, and another £4.3m when he surpassed 25 starts in the same two competitions.

According to A Bola, Liverpool would be due to pay a third £4.3m bill if Nunez makes it to 50 starts.

All in all, if the Reds avoid paying their next add-on, he will have cost them around £73m in transfer fees alone.

Although his spell on Merseyside has not been a complete disaster, with 40 goals to show for his 138 appearances across all competitions, many feel that he has not lived up to his billing.

The Uruguay international scored 15 goals in his first campaign and 18 in his second, but he is on course to finish in single figures this term, with Slot seemingly less of a fan than predecessor Jurgen Klopp.

Having been dumped out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain, and the FA Cup by Plymouth Argyle, five Premier League matches are all that separate Liverpool players from a summer on the beach as champions.

They are currently 13 points clear with only five matches to play, making it nigh on certain that Slot will win the title in his first season as manager.

Liverpool can seal it with a win over Tottenham on Sunday, which would give the boss an opportunity to field his fringe players down the home stretch.

But Nunez would be unwise to get his hopes up if Liverpool are sitting tight to avoid their next bill from Benfica.
