Liverpool fans donned t-shirts and scarfs declaring that they were "back on their perch" after equalling Manchester United on 20 top-flight titles.

Liverpool meanwhile had gone more than 20 years without one and sat on 18.

In the years since Liverpool have returned to those dizzying heights with United falling away in the meantime.



Several fans were seen wearing t-shirts making light of Ferguson's comment - whilst scarfs were also on show with the same sentiment - mocking his "perch" remark.

United have declined massively in the years since Ferguson's departure and the Scot has had to watch several of his former rivals dominate the Premier League.

Gary Neville confessed that the "bread and butter" of the league has often been the greatest barometer of a team and United held the bragging rights in that department until the weekend.

But once Liverpool get level, the painful thing to say is that unfortunately the debate is over for a period until Manchester United become successful again and win leagues."

Ferguson has been left to rue several comments he made during his time in charge on the red half of Manchester.

Even though Manchester City saw the arrival of their billions the Scot declared "never in my lifetime" would they go into a Manchester derby as favourites.

In reality that has been a regular occurrence and, although United took four points off City this season, those from the blue half of Manchester have enjoyed huge dominance over the past decade with Ferguson in attendance for many of their commanding wins.
