Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher felt Liverpool would have been awarded a penalty for a foul on Mohamed Salah, if the Egyptian hadn't been penalised for a barge.

The 32-year-old was incensed after getting the wrong side of the Newcastle United defender in the early stages of their encounter.

The Reds thought they had a genuine claim for a penalty when Hall and Salah went to ground after a tangle inside five minutes.

Stuart Attwell waved play away and it appeared that there wasn't a check from the VAR official in Stockley Park.

The incident proved to be redundant as Liverpool went on to be 2-0 winners over the Magpies.

Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring just six minutes after the incident before Alexis Mac Allister doubled the tally after the hour-mark after the Reds weathered a spell after the interval from Eddie Howe's side.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Ref Watch, Gallagher said: "Again, this is all about the referee.

He feels that Hall has been barged by Salah outside the box.

"If Stuart Attwell hadn't given a foul on Hall, it's 100 per cent a penalty because he's brought Salah down.

"But the referee whistled for the first foul on Hall so a free kick for Newcastle rather than a penalty for Liverpool."

Slot served the first of his two-match touchline ban after being sanctioned following his red card against Everton.

The 46-year-old was slapped with a £70,000 fine but was eligible to watch on from the stands at Anfield, speaking during his press conference, he made a quip at the penalty decision.

"A bit of both, watching it in real time is less emotional because you don't feel the emotion or energy of the players," said Slot.
