Liverpool are one of several Premier League teams said to be in the race to sign Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig this summer.
However, for a reported £64m the Reds could only end up landing themselves with a major headache in the years to come.
Approaching the season's end Arne Slot has now had time to plan ahead and create a transfer strategy with sporting director Richard Hughes.
Liverpool's head coach has now teased how such plans may come to be, juggling a squad that appears destined to win the Premier League title with the need for constant new ways to drive improvement.
"I think at Liverpool there is always a big summer and it is already a big summer now [Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk have renewed contracts]," the boss explained on Friday.

"Let's see what the rest of the summer will bring but it would be strange for me to say now I am not happy with the team we are having because I've said this for a year, we are happy with the team we are having.
And so, Liverpool have been rumoured to return to the club from which they signed their Hungarian ace and sign the boy wonder who was essentially his replacement, Simons.

Previously confirming their interest in a YouTube update, Fabrizio Romano's latest post on X claims how the Dutch international is preparing for the next step of his career.
Whilst this is 'most likely' to be to the Premier League, he has major desire to one day play for Barcelona.
He only completed a permanent £42m switch to Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain in January though he had been on loan from the same time Szoboszlai moved to Anfield.
In that period the 21-year-old has gained a further 72 senior matches' worth of experience, scoring 20 and assisting 21 goals, whilst also securing a starting spot in the Netherlands national team.
Tying in a Sport Bild report that recently claimed Jurgen Klopp - as global head of soccer at Red Bull - and other company bosses wish to slash at least £17m off Leipzig's wage budget, Simons could be one of their high-ticket players to make way.
Romano believes £64m will be enough to secure his services.
Because of the attacking midfielder's high price, in theory English suitors Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United would stand a better chance than foreign rivals.
Slot and the Reds' Dutch cohort will be fully aware of the talent they would gain for that cost too, yet it is that apparent desire of Simons to follow his country's legend Johan Cruyff and play in the Blaugrana colours that makes any deal a risk.

The last thing Anfield chiefs will want is to allocate such a huge chunk of money towards a signing, even if he were to make significant contributions in the years to follow, only to find themselves in the scenario they face with Trent Alexander-Arnold in the present day.
