Liverpool have been handed a major boost ahead of the Carabao Cup final, with Newcastle's Anthony Gordon set to be sidelined for the clash after he received a red card in Sunday's FA Cup clash with Brighton.

The England winger was involved in an altercation with Jan Paul van Hecke, moments after being refused a penalty.

Alexander Isak now appears to be a doubt for the match too after he limped off of the pitch in the 86th minute with an injury, with Callum Wilson coming on in his place.



The Sweden international was a doubt before kick off but recovered in time to face the Seagulls.

Referee Anthony Taylor issued Gordon a direct red, which was then confirmed by VAR.

If Newcastle fail to win an appeal, it will mark the second consecutive Carabao Cup final they enter missing a crucial player; last year, goalkeeper Nick Pope was sent off in a league match against Liverpool and subsequently missed the final against Manchester United.

Gordon's dismissal wasn't the only one at St James' Park, as Brighton's Tariq Lamptey also saw red after earning a second yellow card late in the game.

Speaking about Gordon's dismissal, BBC Radio 5 Live commentator and ex-England goalie Paul Robinson remarked: "Anthony Gordon has gone over the top of Jan Paul van Hecke.

"Gordon knows he cannot get there and he has run into Van Hecke with two hands.

Fabian Schar thought he had secured a late victory for the Magpies before it was soon deemed offside, leading to extra-time between the Premier League teams.

Gordon played a significant role in Newcastle's journey to the Carabao Cup final, scoring in both legs of the semi-final triumph over Arsenal.
