Liverpool have been handed another clear penalty verdict after Mohamed Salah thought he was fouled by Lewis Hall in the win over Newcastle.

Inside the opening 10 minutes, the Reds winger looked to receive a pass in behind from Trent Alexander-Arnold, but he fell to the floor in a challenge with Hall.

Referee Stuart Atwell blew his whistle for an infringement but to the surprise of Salah, Arne Slot and the Liverpool fans at Anfield, it was for a free-kick to Newcastle with it deemed Salah committed the foul.

As replays aired, Ally McCoist made his thoughts clear on co-commentary for TNT Sports.

"I think Salah does get fouled, but it’s whether he fouls Hall initially," he said.

Whatever way you look at it, they might be a bit fortunate, Newcastle."

"He had an arm on him outside the box but I’m with you - I don’t think it was enough to give a free kick," he added after being told by fellow commentator Darren Fletcher why Salah was penalised.

While there is certainly contact from Hall, Salah appears to instigate it with former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett believing the right call was made.

“The referee has clearly penalised Salah for the push on the Newcastle United player [Lewis Hall], before Salah goes to ground," he said as quoted by Football Insider.

A correct call by the referee.”

Both Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister were on target, with Salah and Luis Diaz also missing chances to make the scoreline more reflective of the dominant display.
