Gary Neville and Mike Dean have explained why Liverpool were not awarded a penalty in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United.

The Reds were facing the Magpies at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon and appealed for a spot-kick in the first half.

Luis Diaz was battling for possession with Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier before appealing to referee John Brooks for a handball by the England international.

Stuart Attwell was on VAR duty for the game and checked the incident before confirming that the on-field decision of no penalty would stand.

Neville was on commentary alongside Dean and lead commentator Peter Drury for Sky Sports and ITV's coverage of the final at Wembley.

The former Manchester United defender provided insight into what VAR said about the handball appeal.

"VAR are saying that his [Trippier] arms are out for balance, just takes it a little bit away from [Luis] Diaz," said Neville on commentary.

"I think in Europe it is a penalty.

I think in England we are probably all agreeing we wouldn't like it against us.

"You always know when the VAR is not sure when he carries on talking to the referee for about a minute after explaining."

Dean went on to explain why he believes the right decision was made not to award a penalty for Liverpool.

"I kind of understand why Stuart [Attwell] is saying," said Dean on Sky Sports commentary.

"I agree it's not a penalty, you do see them given don't we," said Neville.

Liverpool would go into the half-time break at Wembley 1-0 behind to Newcastle after an opening goal from Dan Burn.
