Injuries during the 2023-24 Premier League season cost Liverpool more than £20m as Jurgen Klopp's side suffered 49 different fitness issues, it has been claimed.

The Reds were in the hunt for the title but eventually finished third behind Manchester City and Arsenal.

But Klopp's hopes of delivering a second league title to Anfield before the end of his tenure were dealt a huge blow in the early months of 2024 as injuries sidelined Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah, Curtis Jones, Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota.

February's League Cup final triumph over Chelsea highlighted just how many absentees Klopp had to contend with as Liverpool ended that memorable night at Wembley with Jayden Danns, Bobby Clark, Jarell Quansah, James McConnell, Conor Bradley and Caoimhin Kelleher all on the pitch.

Now, though, new research from Howden Insurance Broker has shed light on how injuries derailed Liverpool's Premier League campaign.

Analysis shows the Reds suffered 49 injuries across 38 Premier League games.

The study also reveals that February was Liverpool's most damaging month, as the 29-day period saw Klopp's side suffer 11 injuries.

November (7), December (5), and April (5), meanwhile, ranked next highest.

In total, the study calculates that those 49 fitness issues cost Liverpool £20.8m.

The data shows that the Reds were sandwiched between title rivals Manchester City (57) and Arsenal (46) for both the number of injuries sustained (57 and 46) and total cost (£27.2m and £18.9m) incurred as a result.

But it was Newcastle United, after qualifying for the Champions League for the first time since 2003, who suffered the most injuries in the Premier League (76) last season.

However, Manchester United's 75 injuries incurred the highest cost out of all 20 teams (£39.81m).

The cost is calculated by multiplying the daily base salary of the injured player by the number of days they were unavailable due to their injury.
