And Liverpool this season have taken a fancy to knocking over almost every team they come into contact with as they continue their pursuit of honours in the Premier League, Champions League and, in a fortnight, the League Cup final against Newcastle United at Wembley.

Having now scored more than 100 goals in all competitions and won 20 of their 28 top-flight matches - netting 66 times in the process, by some distance the most - Arne Slot's side have been delivering where it matters, with no club's Premier League games having seen more goals than the 92 involving Liverpool.

And it's not Liverpool's fault the others cannot match the sheer consistency of their performance and results.

As for the unusual sight of Nottingham Forest in the top three and Bournemouth challenging for a Champions League place, almost everyone was delighted when, in the Premier League's greatest story, Leicester City won the title in 2016.

Leicester triumphed because they were by some distance the best team that season, eventually winning the title by 10 points.

Nobody else took advantage of the usual suspects being either in transition or simply nowhere near good enough.

Oh, and let's not forget two of the most thrilling Premier League campaigns, certainly in terms of consistent quality from the title contenders, saw Liverpool finish a point behind City in 2019 and 2022 - the only two times in English top-flight history a team gaining more than 90 points has failed to win the league.
