Liverpool have already exposed 'poor' Premier League myth and critics know it

After all, you can only beat what's put in front of you.

And Liverpool this season have taken a fancy to knocking over almost every team they come into contact with as they continue their pursuit of honours in the Premier League, Champions League and, in a fortnight, the League Cup final against Newcastle United at Wembley.

Victory over the Magpies on Wednesday moved the Reds a whopping 13 points clear at the Premier League summit and left them requiring a maximum of seven wins - six if nearest rivals Arsenal are one of the vanquished in May - to claim a 20th championship.

Having now scored more than 100 goals in all competitions and won 20 of their 28 top-flight matches - netting 66 times in the process, by some distance the most - Arne Slot's side have been delivering where it matters, with no club's Premier League games having seen more goals than the 92 involving Liverpool.

That, though, hasn't been enough for some people.

"My gosh, are they not a bit dull to watch?" said talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy last month.

Salah now has an astonishing 30 goals and 22 assists in 39 appearances this season.

That, though, hasn't been enough for some people.

"Stats-wise and consistency-wise he is in the conversation (for best Premier League player), in the top three definitely, but in terms of someone who excites me, the maverick, that’s what elevates them for me to be the best," said former Leeds United centre-back Rio Ferdinand this week.

And that's before the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Newcastle United are taken into account, all not exactly living up to their supposed reputations.

Clearly there is huge admiration from Shearer for the job Arne Slot has done during his debut season in charge at Anfield, particularly given the sizeable shoes he has had to fill in following the footsteps of Jurgen Klopp.

But, unwittingly or not, his comments fit into the growing narrative that this is not a vintage Premier League season, particularly given how the promoted teams have struggled.

For good reason is the Premier League increasingly likely to gain an extra Champions League place for next season.

The reality is nobody, apart from the winning team, wants to see a procession.

And it's not Liverpool's fault the others cannot match the sheer consistency of their performance and results.

As for the unusual sight of Nottingham Forest in the top three and Bournemouth challenging for a Champions League place, almost everyone was delighted when, in the Premier League's greatest story, Leicester City won the title in 2016.

Leicester triumphed because they were by some distance the best team that season, eventually winning the title by 10 points.

Nobody else took advantage of the usual suspects being either in transition or simply nowhere near good enough.

Oh, and let's not forget two of the most thrilling Premier League campaigns, certainly in terms of consistent quality from the title contenders, saw Liverpool finish a point behind City in 2019 and 2022 - the only two times in English top-flight history a team gaining more than 90 points has failed to win the league.

Is this the best Premier League season ever?
