There has been quite a lot going on regarding Liverpool in recent days.
After a whirlwind week that was beating both the Premier League and European champions with a combined 4-0 scoreline, it seems that plenty of news was kept under wraps until the fixtures were played.
On Monday, we received big news on Mohamed Salah and his contract situation at Liverpool – with the Egyptian reportedly willing to agree to a one-year extension.
We also received an intriguing update on Martin Zubimendi, who now seems open to leaving Real Sociedad in the coming summer transfer window.
David Ornstein has even revealed that Eintracht Frankfurt expects Liverpool-linked Omar Marmoush to depart the club in the summer.
What is the latest on Liverpool and Nico Williams
The Athletic has reported that Liverpool has had a long-standing admiration for Nico Williams.
In the 2023/24 La Liga season, Williams made 31 appearances, contributing 5 goals and 11 assists as Bilbao won the Copa Del Ray.
Williams’s impressive form continued into the international arena during Euro 2024.
He played a pivotal role in Spain’s triumphant campaign, delivering standout performances that culminated in being named the Player of the Match in the final against England.
The 2024/25 season has not started as brightly for the 22-year-old however, managing two goals and an assist in 18 appearances across all competitions.
During the summer transfer window, Barcelona expressed significant interest in acquiring Williams, but eventually settled with Dani Olmo with the rejuvenation of Raphinha easing any concerns of a missed opportunity.
However, Liverpool could yet make a move, with David Ornstein revealing that Williams’ chances of joining a Premier League side are now on the rise:
“Last summer, there was major interest from the Premier League but Nico Williams’ heart was set on joining Barcelona.”
“He waited for them and when that did not materialise, he decided to remain at Athletic Club.”
Now it appears Barcelona — with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal doing well — are not there for him, which increases the chances of a Premier League switch and he is more open to that than previously.”
The Athletic journalist also highlighted that Liverpool is amongst the European elite who have a ‘long-standing admiration’ for the player, while also revealing the slightly low release clause:
“There is a release clause of around €55million (£46m) and Athletic will only sell if that gets activated, so the fact his contract ends in 2027 is irrelevant,” Ornstein wrote.
“Williams earns a high salary but the clause is fairly low for a player of this level, so it is probable he will move in 2025 — the bigger question is whether it will be in January or at the end of the season.”
“He would prefer not to move in the winter market but you never know?
Either way, the likes of Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur are among those who hold a long-standing admiration.”
