Liverpool in 'talks' for Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement as documents exchanged over transfer

The Bayer Leverkusen right-wing back or winger is currently one of the most sought-after players in Europe and PA report that Liverpool are interested, although insiders say negotiations are still in their infancy.

Frimpong, 24, started his career at Manchester City but has made a significant impact at Leverkusen since transferring from Celtic in 2021, contributing to their Bundesliga title win last season and their journey to the Europa League final.

Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea are also reported to have shown interest in Frimpong, who was part of the Netherlands team that made it to the semi-finals of Euro 2024.

It is suggested that a possible catalyst for Liverpool's interest could be Trent Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid, following rumours that an agreement has been reached for the England international to join the reigning European champions.

"Everything is almost agreed, it is just abouit the final details of the contract and then Trent Alexander-Arnold will be a new Real Madrid player on a five-year deal," journalist Fabrizio Romano said on the Market Madness podcast.

"The agreement is really close, they already started exchanging all the documents in terms of official proposals, so we wait really for the final steps and then Liverpool will be informed by Real Madrid at the right moment as soon as they get everything signed and completed.

"My expectation is absolutely for Trent to be a new Real Madrid player in the summer."

Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, meanwhile, has expressed confusion over why Alexander-Arnold doesn't envision a long-term future at Anfield, given the recent reports suggesting he's Madrid-bound.

Born and bred in Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold debuted for the club at 18 in 2016 and has since won the Champions League, Premier League, Carabao Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.

With the Reds currently leading the league by 12 points, a second Premier League title seems highly likely.

Liverpool supporters have reacted with dismay to news that Alexander-Arnold is set to depart from the club.

On the Stick to Football podcast, Jamie Carragher weighed in on the situation, stating: "It seems like there's not one thing people are unhappy with – it's leaving on a free or that he should have come out and told the club earlier – people are angry for three or four different things.

"I'm not angry about him going on a free.

Where I'm at is that, as a local player and a Liverpool fan, Liverpool are in a position where they're competing for the league and a European Cup every year.

"So, if you're a Liverpool fan and a local player, I'm just disappointed that he doesn't think that this is it.

"I'm putting myself in his position, where I'd be thinking that we could go level with Manchester United in league trophies, I've got another seven or eight years at Liverpool and want to get three or four ahead of them, with a couple more European Cups."

Alexander-Arnold has faced scrutiny over his defensive capabilities, especially following a 2-2 draw with Manchester United in January.

The remarks regarding his potential transfer to Real Madrid first surfaced around that time, leading Carragher to suggest that his defending might be even more under the microscope in the Spanish league.

Carragher concluded with his opinion on the differing pressures between leagues: "This idea that Trent won't be as questioned defensively as he is in the Premier League, it's a top league.

Real Madrid expect to win the Champions League every season.

"If you go to Bayern Munich in a quarter-final and let your team down with a couple of goals (conceded), the heat is going to be on."
