Liverpool have been named as one of the top European clubs interested in one of RB Leipzig’s most prized assets.
The Reds have been relatively quiet in the last two transfer windows, much to the frustration of fans, who have seen just Federico Chiesa unveiled at the club since last season.
The lack of transfer activity has fueled frustration and scepticism, particularly online, with many supporters questioning the club’s strategic approach to transfers and the role of Sporting Director Richard Hughes.
The elongated contract saga involving Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold has also been an issue of concern for the bulk of Liverpool fans.
However, the club have plans to strengthen in the summer, with Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirming this last month.
Speaking in January, manager Slot said about the upcoming summer window:
“Liverpool should always be competing for a league title.
I’m hoping I will be able to keep the club at that level.”
“I know people sometimes question this because they haven’t seen us doing a lot in the transfer market in the summer and now in the winter as well.
There’s a reason for that – because we’re happy with the squad.”
“But I do know we’re definitely working on strengthening in the summer.”
According to German outlet Bild, Liverpool is already actively looking at the Bundesliga market for possible additions in the summer.
Liverpool linked to RB Leipzig defender
Liverpool could reportedly battle the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Chelsea for the signature of RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba during this summer’s transfer window.
This is according to Bild (via Metro Sport), who claim that a number of clubs are keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old’s situation at the German club.
The 22-year-old signed a new long-term contract with Leipzig last October, but his deal includes a release clause of €90m (£75m), and it is understood that he could be on the move at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
Liverpool have successfully shopped in the Leipzig market recently, with Ibrahima Konate and Dominik Szoboszlai joining the Reds from the German side.
They could be getting another player from there soon, with the Bild report adding that Lukeba is ready to move to a major club, and the centre-back is hopeful that his release clause will be activated this summer.
Bild’s report confirms a report from French news outlet RMC Sport last October, which revealed that Liverpool was interested in a summer move for the defender.
The 22-year-old joined the Leipzig from Lyon in 2023 for €34m after two seasons in the first team of the French outfit.
He has had his fitness issues this season.
The Frenchman has made 18 appearances for Leipzig this season.
