Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has been ruled out of a shock return to Rangers until at least the summer with Barry Ferguson set to take the reigns until the end of the season.
Gerrard, 44, who left Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq by mutual consent last month, has been linked with a sensational move back to Ibrox, three-and-a-half years since quitting for Aston Villa.
Rangers made the decision to sack Philippe Clement on Sunday following their surprise 2-0 home defeat against St Mirren and Gerrard is the firm favourite to replace the Frenchman.

However, according to talkSPORT, Gerrard would be unlikely to take it before April due to potential tax issues in Saudi Arabia.
Although Gerrard might not be on course for an immediate return, it's added that a move back to Rangers could still happen this summer.
In the meantime, former Rangers midfielder Ferguson, who played over 400 matches for them, is set to be handed the job until the end of the season.
He will meet with the club on Monday to discuss the role.
Rangers released a statement after Clement, who had been in charge since October 2023, was axed: "RANGERS Football Club can confirm it has tonight parted company with men’s first-team manager, Philippe Clement.
"The club would like to put on record their sincere thanks to Philippe for his hard work and dedication during his spell in charge.
A further update from the club will follow in due course."
As for Gerrard, he left Al-Ettifaq on January 29 with the club 12th in the Saudi Pro League table and just five points above the relegation zone.
During his time in the Middle East, Gerrard won 23 and drew 16 of his 59 games in charge.
