Xabi Alonso, the former Liverpool midfielder, is in pole position to take over at Real Madrid should the Spanish giant decide to part ways with Carlo Ancelotti.

Ancelotti's position at the Bernabeu is said to be under serious threat after Madrid's Champions League exit at the hands of Arsenal, with the club also seven points off the top of La Liga, albeit with a game in hand.

It was reported in the immediate aftermath of Wednesday's 2-1 loss to Arsenal that Ancelotti was set to depart following the Copa del Rey final between Madrid and Barcelona on April 26, but that would be bizarre timing, with the club still in with a chance of ending the season as the Spanish champion.

Madrid needs to clarify its position on Ancelotti ahead of this summer's expanded Club World Cup, as the Italian's contract is due to expire midway through the tournament.

It must decide whether Ancelotti will stay on to guide the team during the inaugural event, or leave to make room for his replacement, which could end up being former Liverpool midfielder Alonso.

Madrid is reported by The Athletic to have sounded out Alonso about the possibility of becoming the next Madrid manager should a change take place.

Jurgen Klopp was linked with the job earlier this week but he is focused on his job as Red Bull's Global Head of Soccer, a role he only moved into in January.

Meanwhile, Ancelotti is said to be the Brazilian FA's number one target to take over the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup after dismissing former boss Dorival Junior after the team was thrashed 4-1 by Argentina in qualifying.

Jurgen Klopp has been linked with the Real Madrid in recent days.

A representative of the Brazilian FA is said to have traveled to Madrid during the week of the second leg against Arsenal with the intention of meeting with Ancelotti and discussing the Selecao managerial role.

Ancelotti neglected to discuss his future ahead of Madrid's game against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
