Liverpool have been named a potential suitor for Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.
The Ukranian shot stopper sees his contract expire in the summer of 2025, and according to reports, he has no intention of extending his stay at the Bernabéu.
Lunin’s contributions to Real Madrid cannot be overlooked, especially during Courtois’ injury spells last season.
The Ukrainian played a pivotal role in Real Madrid’s Champions League campaign, including notable performances in the knockout stages against the likes of Manchester City and Bayern Munich.
Real Madrid’s willingness to negotiate stems from the need to either cash in on Lunin now or risk losing him for free next summer.
Spanish outlet Sport have reported that Lunin has not renewed his contract this summer and is not looking to do so before his contract expires.
This is because the 26-year-old does not want to remain second fiddle to Thibaut Courtois and wants to forge his career as a No.1
The report names Liverpool as one of the clubs that have been in contact to find out the conditions of a potential deal.
Bringing in Lunin would provide Liverpool with a high-quality alternative who has proven his capabilities on big stages.
Unfortunately, his story sounds very similar to that of Caoimhin Kelleher.
Andriy Lunin deal unlikely for Liverpool
At one point, it seemed that Caoimhin Kelleher would be leaving the Anfield this summer.
The Irishman made 24 appearances last season as he filled in for an injured Alisson Becker.
The run of games certainly got Kelleher thinking, and after the season in an interview with the Athletic he hinted that he was looking to be the number one – be it at Liverpool or elsewhere.
However, since then, the situation has calmed somewhat, and it looks like the 25-year-old could stay yet.
Likewise, Lunin will not want to sign for Liverpool as a back-up option and potentially jostling with Kelleher to be the deputy.
Furthermore, it is expected that Vitezslav Jaros – who enjoyed a fine spell on loan with Austrian outfit SK Sturm Graz last season – will be the third-choice.
While it is impossible to rule out any transfer, this one seems very unlikely as things stand.
