Danny Murphy says the blame for Trent Alexander-Arnold's mooted exit lies solely at the feet of the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group.
Alexander-Arnold, like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, has been free to speak with overseas clubs since January after entering the final six months of his deal and is now thought to be close to finalising a bombshell switch to the Bernabeu.
The Liverpool hierarchy and FSG have been questioned in some quarters for allowing such a situation to materialise.
And Murphy has called them out, saying that they could have sold Alexander-Arnold rather than risk losing him for free if it was clear he would not sign a new contract.
