The Uruguay international went on to redeem himself, scoring the equaliser in the 51st minute and also winning a penalty for his team minutes later.
Mohamed Salah made no mistake from the spot to move into third place of all-time Liverpool top-scorers - surpassing Gordon Hodgson.
He added to his tally by converting a second goal - also from the spot - with two minutes from time.
