European football’s governing body UEFA has distributed a record €233 million (£200m) to clubs across the continent through its Club Benefits Programme, with Liverpool FC positioned among the elite clubs receiving substantial payments for releasing players to national team duties during the 2020-2024 cycle.
The funds, allocated for player releases during the UEFA Nations League, EURO 2024 qualifiers, and the EURO 2024 final tournament, mark a 16.5% increase from the previous €200m distribution.
The payments stem from a memorandum between UEFA and the European Club Association (ECA) designed to recognize clubs’ role in developing international talent.
Under the agreed mechanism:
Clubs receive €10,000 per player per match for releasing squad members to UEFA Nations League and European Qualifiers.
During the EURO 2024 final tournament, clubs earned €8,500-€12,500 per player daily, adjusted based on FIFA’s training compensation categories.
This structure aims to balance compensation between elite clubs supplying multiple internationals and smaller teams developing future talents.
UEFA President Aleksander ?eferin emphasized that the programme ensures “every success of our competitions is a shared one,” benefiting clubs at all levels.
The Reds had 14 senior players participate in EURO 2024 qualifiers and the final tournament.
And indeed UEFA has confirmed the Reds received €3.54million (£ 3.04 million) for letting their senior players play in international tournaments between 2020 and 2024.
Manchester City’s confirmed €5.17m payout was the largest to any club – and Real Madrid’s €4.79m came in second.
Other top sides like Real Madrid were paid €4.79m.
The record disbursement reflects UEFA’s efforts to maintain club cooperation with international fixtures.
UEFA President Aleksander ?eferin said:
“It is fantastic to see clubs of all sizes and levels, across the entire football pyramid, receiving financial rewards for their vital role in developing players who contribute to the success of our national team competitions – including the highly successful UEFA EURO 2024 final tournament.”
“Every success of our competitions is a shared one, and this benefits programme is another testament to that principle, recognising the dedication of those who work tirelessly to make European football the greatest sport in the world?
