One of the latest transfer rumours concerning Liverpool centres around Lyon star Rayan Cherki.

Reports in recent days have claimed that the Reds are interested in signing the France international in the January transfer window.

It has been reported by French news outlet RMC Sport that Liverpool have been "intensifying" their interest in signing Cherki, with the player admired by both Arne Slot and the Anfield hierarchy.



The report claimed that Lyon would demand a fee of at least €30 million (£25 million) to allow Cherki to leave the club in the New Year.

Cherki plays on either the ring or left wing for Lyon, and is also capable of performing in the No.10 role.

It remains to be seen if the reported interest from Liverpool is genuine or mere speculation as the transfer window fast approaches.

Should Liverpool decide to sign Cherki, one question will be what squad number he could be handed.

Cherki currently wears the No.18 shirt for Lyon, but that same number is currently occupied by Cody Gakpo in the Reds squad.

The most likely number for Cherki to be handed could be No.12, which was previously worn by Joe Gomez before be was given the No.2 shirt ahead of the 2022/23 season.

There is also No.15, which has been available since the summer of 2023 after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain left the club.
