Darwin Nunez continues to be linked with a move away from Liverpool - but it has been claimed Benfica fear they may miss out on a cash windfall from their former striker.

Nunez has failed to cement his place as a first-team regular since arriving at Anfield from the Portuguese side in the summer of 2023 in a club-record transfer.

The Uruguayan international cost an initial fee of €75million - which converted into £64m at the time - with the deal brokered also included €25m of achievable add-ons.

While neither Benfica nor Liverpool have confirmed the exact breakdown of the additional fees, there have been various claims since the transfer of the agreement between the two clubs.

And the latest report in Portuguese outlet A Bola has suggested Benfica could miss out on €5m should Nunez not start another game for Liverpool.

Their claim states Benfica were paid €5m when the forward reached 10 starts in the Premier League and Champions League combined, another €5m when reaching 35 and a further €5m when tallying 60.

Nunez currently stands on 59 starts combined in both competitions, but has been in the XI only once since early February when scoring in the Premier League home win over Southampton.

The ECHO understands, though, there is no suggestion the player is being omitted for financial reasons, with Liverpool having resisted big-money interest from Saudi Arabia in Nunez in January to instead have the player as part of their plans for the second half of the season with the Reds at that point still challenging on four fronts.

Nunez is close to picking up a Premier League winners' medal with Liverpool needing just three more points from their final five games to be crowned champions.

But with the Reds expected to pursue signing a new number nine in the summer, Nunez's future is shrouded in uncertainty with the Saudi Pro League likely to make another attempt to lure the player away in the forthcoming transfer window.
