Howard Webb has become increasingly the face of Premier League refereeing over recent years after returning to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).

After retiring from refereeing a decade ago, he briefly became the body’s technical director.

Webb, 53, then became their chief refereeing officer in the summer of 2022 after working in similar roles for Major League Soccer (MLS) and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) for several years.

He also worked as a pundit for BT Sport during that time.

The PGMOL chief now regularly appears on Premier League Productions’ Match Officials Mic’d Up programme alongside Michael Owen, which Sky Sports and TNT Sports broadcast.

He also appeared on The Overlap’s Stick to Football this international break.

They described their guest as “legendary” and recalled him being “regarded as one of the best referees in the world,” but it’s fair to say one former Liverpool player has not always spoken so highly of Webb.

It was the first time a Premier League player had been sanctioned for his social media activity.

A decade after the incident, Babel poked fun at the ordeal in response to Webb’s marriage to fellow former referee Bibiana Steinhaus.

That promise did not extend to other referees, though.

?

Only last year, Babel shared an image of Simon Hooper in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt after he sent off Curtis Jones in the infamous match that “serious human error” led to Luis Diaz's goal incorrectly disallowed for offside.
