Alexis Mac Allister has bemoaned Liverpool's lack of games in the business end of the season

Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister admits the squad "didn't want to be in this position" as they were left to watch the Champions League.

Their exit from Europe means they've had a week without a match with West Ham visiting Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds were the best team in the Champions League group phase, winning all but one of their games, before they were beaten in the last 16 by PSG - and that came just days before Newcastle beat them in the Carabao Cup final.



It means Liverpool went from eyeing three trophies to one.

Arne Slot's side have led the Premier League for almost the entire season as the Dutchman looks to emulate Jurgen Klopp by winning England's top flight.

Last Sunday was only Liverpool's second loss in the Premier League, but they've been left to stew on it for a week.

Arsenal and Aston Villa are having to manage the weekend-midweek schedule given they remain in Champions League contention and Mac Allister admits the squad are not relishing their rest and would rather be in the hunt for more honours.

He told the club's website: "It does feel weird, to be honest.

Twice already they've beaten the Hammers this term and will look to record a third win and consolidate their 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League with their champion status still pending.

Despite the recent setbacks, which will likely leave them with just the one trophy this season, captain Virgil van Dijk has rejected the idea that the shine has been taken off their campaign.

That was put to him by Michael Owen, but the Dutchman was quick to hit back.

Liverpool weren't tipped to challenge for the title as they dealt with Klopp's departure but Slot has made the transition seamless with the Reds showing a level of consistency whilst all their rivals struggle.

Van Dijk said: “I think what you said, at the start of the season, I think no one expected us to even try to fight on all four fronts, obviously we’re at the stage now where we’re still fighting for the biggest, and that’s the reality.
