Liverpool tormented by son of former Anfield favourite as cult hero watches on
Liverpool Under-18s fell to a heavy defeat at home to Man City on Wednesday afternoon
Liverpool Under-18s fell to a heavy 5-0 at home to Man City on Wednesday as the son of a former Reds hero tormented Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s side. Reigan Heskey - son of Emile - scored twice as the U18 Premier League North leaders ran out emphatic winners in Kirkby.
The young Reds actually only trailed 1-0 at half-time as Matty Warhurst, having only come on as a substitute midway through the first half, netted with a smart back-heel from a Heskey set-piece.
In truth, the goal had been coming with Cameron Williams needing to clear off his own line following an early City corner, while the visitors were later denied by the crossbar following another set-piece.
City doubled their lead straight after the restart as Warhurst scored his second of the game. Played in behind the defence, he found the top corner with a clinical finish.
Heskey then got on the scoresheet himself as the likes of father, Emile, and fellow former Liverpool man Kolo Toure watched on from the stands in Kirkby.
The teenager first curled home a free-kick from a tight angle, before winning and converting a penalty to make it 4-0.
And were it not for goalkeeper Bailey Hall, he would have had a hat-trick late on only to be denied by a fine save from the Liverpool shot-stopper.
However, Hall could do little to deny Kian Noble in stoppage-time as he wrapped up the scoring as his shot went in off the post.
Liverpool Under-18s are back in action on Wednesday 23 April when they travel to Middlesbrough.
They currently sit 12th in U18 Premier League North, four points clear of bottom-placed Leeds United, with three games left to play.
Liverpool starting XI: Hall, Esdaille, Williams, Owen, Enahoro-Marcus, Lonmeni (Airoboma, 70), O’Connor, Ayman, Sonni-Lambie, Onanuga (Cisse, 82), Ahmed (Martin, 88).
Unused subs: Bernard, Bradshaw.
