It seems that Liverpool are still keeping their eyes open for a midfielder despite Ryan Gravenberch’s emergence this season.

His unexpected development in the deeper midfield role has prompted serious questions about whether Liverpool’s long-standing pursuit of a dedicated number six remains necessary or if Gravenberch has effectively solved their midfield conundrum.

Indeed, there are indications that rather than pursuing an established number six, Liverpool might now be more inclined to sign a young, developing talent who can provide depth behind Gravenberch.

The only depth in the position remains Wataru Endo, who seems to have accepted his role as an impact sub – and has also won over Arne Slot:

“Wata has been really useful for us this season.

It’s not always a matter of how many minutes you play; you can be very important in two minutes and you can be less important in 90 minutes,” Slot said after the win over Wolves last month.

“What makes Wata special in my opinion is every time we have to rely on him, whether it’s 5,10, or 25 minutes, he shows up.”

The emergence of Ryan Gravenberch as a viable option in the deeper midfield role has undoubtedly altered Liverpool’s transfer calculus moving forward.

What once seemed like an urgent priority – signing a specialist defensive midfielder – now appears less critical given the Dutchman’s impressive adaptation to the position.

But it seems the club is still keeping their options open in that position.

That’s because Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has reported Liverpool are interested in Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson ahead of the summer transfer window.

The defensive midfielder, who also functions as a box-to-box option, has already made 33 appearances for Frankfurt this campaign.

And according to Sky Germany, the Reds are one of a plethora of clubs showing interest in the Swedish international:

“Many top clubs are interested in Hugo Larsson, and Eintracht Frankfurt are expecting concrete offers for the 20-y/o midfielder,” Florian Plettenberg wrote on X.

“A summer transfer is possible, with Markus Krösche demanding at least €60m as a transfer fee

Larsson is under contract until 2029

Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, and several other teams are monitoring him, including top Bundesliga clubs.”

Rather than completely abandoning their search for a defensive midfielder or pursuing a high-profile signing who would displace Gravenberch, the club might focus on finding a complementary player with more specialized defensive skills who could fill in for Gravenberch more consistently than Endo.

And if that is the plan, then a move for a player like Larsson would make a lot of sense.
