With its FA Cup duties done and dusted this month, Liverpool will turn its attention back to Premier League and Champions League matters for the remainder of January as Arne Slot’s side looks to further its advantage in both competitions.

After disappointing performances against Manchester United and Tottenham, the Reds eventually picked up their first win of 2025 as they beat Accrington Stanley 4-0 in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Goals from Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jayden Danns and Federico Chiesa booked their place in the fourth round of the competition.

They won’t have to wait too long to find out who they’ll face in the next stage, with most of the Premier League’s big guns still in the hat - although one of Arsenal or Manchester United will go out later.

Liverpool doesn’t have to worry about any cup obligations until February though, with the focus completely on matters in the league and Europe now until the end of January, and the next five games could play a big part in the Reds’ season.

Liverpool next 5 fixtures 14 January: Nottingham Forest (A, Premier League) 18 January: Brentford (A, Premier League) 21 January: Lille (H, Champions League) 25 January: Ipswich (H, Premier League) 29 January: PSV (A, Champions League)

Tuesday’s game at Nottingham Forest is set to be a huge one for the title race - and who would have thought we’d be saying that at the start of the season?

Liverpool needs to rediscover its form in the league after that disappointing showing against United, but they know Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will not make things easy for them.

Brentford is another tricky away day for the Reds, although they will be expected to come away with all three points before they return to Champions League action.

They need just a point against Lille to guarantee a spot in the last-16, and crucially avoid playing in the extra play-off round - chances are they’re already through anyway, so it could be an opportunity for Slot to rest some of his bigger names.

Ipswich visit Anfield thereafter, with Kieran McKenna’s side just starting to find their feet recently, while the final league phase game against PSV Eindhoven should hopefully hold no significance for Liverpool.

While the Reds will be fully focused on their own games, they will likely also be keeping a close eye on their nearest challenger, with Arsenal sitting six points behind them in the league.

Arsenal next 5 fixtures 15 January: Tottenham (H, Premier League) 18 January: Aston Villa (H, Premier League) 22 January: Dinamo Zagbreb (H, Champions League) 25 January: Wolves (A, Premier League) 29 January: Girona (A, Champions League)

Liverpool knows all about the threat Tottenham carries, so that won’t be an easy fixture for Arsenal to start things off - especially with the added significance of a north London derby.

Aston Villa is another tricky fixture to contend with for the Gunners, and the Reds will no doubt be hoping for a slip-up in at least one of those games.

Attentions then turn to the Champions League, and a home game against Dinamo Zagreb shouldn’t pose Mikel Arteta’s side any problems - a victory would take them a step closer to the knockout stages.

A trip to Wolves looks a much trickier prospect now than it did just a few weeks ago, with Vitor Pereira breathing new life into the relegation-threatened side, while a trip to Girona rounds off the month before a big February lies in wait for both Liverpool and Arsenal.
