Luis Diaz has spoken about Mohamed Salah and the amount of help and impact the Egyptian has had on his career.
Diaz has been a success at Liverpool since making the switch from Porto in January 2022.
However, when he arrived initially, he was faced with the daunting prospect of trying to force his way into a Liverpool team that had one of the most clinical forward lines in Premier League history.
The trio of Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane were still at the club when Diaz arrived, and dislodging one member of the band that had brought much success to Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp was a big task.
The Colombian did enough to become a regular under Klopp, making 98 appearances and scoring 24 times.
But he has taken his game to another level under Arne Slot, with the 28-year-old scoring 12 times in just 32 appearances under the Dutchman.
Luis Diaz credits Salah for his Liverpool success
Perhaps things could have gone Diaz had it not been for the help he got from Salah during his early days at the club.
Speaking to Sports Illustrated, the Colombian revealed how Salah helped his game during his early days at Liverpool.
“I remember during my first year here, Liverpool’s front three was Bobby, Sadio and Mo Salah,” he said.
“You obviously learn so much.
‘You can improve here,’ or ‘Take your shot like this.’ Those small details make all the difference, and of course, you still need to work on that on the pitch.
“There are many ways to work on it and improve your finishing, how to reach the goal better, and all of those small things that make a lot of sense.”
Diaz went on to name Salah, alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar, as players who inspire his game today.
“My idol and someone I’ve always loved watching is Leo Messi because I grew up seeing him play,” Diaz added.
“Neymar, too – an incredible player.
You know something will happen when he has the ball, he will either get an assist or score a goal in any game, and he has that mentality that in the next game, he will score a couple more?
These are the players that help you grow, and you enjoy watching them.”
Salah himself has revealed that helping his Liverpool teammates improve is one of his goals this season.
