As Liverpool stroll towards the Premier League title, the more their looming achievement is downplayed by rivals.

The Reds sit 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table and need just six more points from their final six games to be crowned champions.

Having lost just twice in the English top-flight all season, they have been the cream of the crop and will be well-deserved champions.

But given the fact that second-placed Arsenal trail by 13 points, reigning champions Man City are 21 points behind in fifth place and Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are 14th and 15th respectively - 38 and 39 points fewer Arne Slot’s side - critics have called the quality of this season’s Premier League into question.

‘It has been a weak season’ has been an increasingly frequent stick to beat Liverpool with as the Reds take advantage of the lack of a close title-rival.

Even some of their own have felt similar, with former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant recently claiming it has been a ‘boring’ year in the English top-flight.

Of course, there is an easy response to this.

While the Premier League has been denied either a nail-biting title-race or relegation fight - with Ipswich Town and Leicester City on the verge of joining Southampton in making a swift return to the Championship - the rest of the table has been up for grabs.

Nottingham Forest currently sit third and are well-placed to qualify for the Champions League, with Newcastle United also closing in on a return to Europe's elite competition.

In truth, this mid-table pack has proven the competitiveness of the Premier League this season.

Fulham sit ninth in the table but became only the second side to beat Liverpool in the English top-flight this season, while they have also taken points off Arsenal, Newcastle United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

Bournemouth and Brighton have both taken points off Arsenal, Newcastle United, Man City, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Spurs

Meanwhile, 11th-placed Brentford proved to be a stumbling block for Arsenal, Newcastle, Man City and Chelsea, while Newcastle, Man City, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Spurs all slipped up against 12th-placed Palace.

Even below them, 13th-placed Everton have also taken points off Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle, Man City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Spurs.

This is perhaps where the Premier League this season has been won and lost.

Rather than being a sign of their strength - or credit those in mid-table - it must instead be a sign of the traditional title hopefuls’ weaknesses.

Yet if that isn’t enough to convince of the Premier League’s strength this season, let us look to the Champions League instead.

While Liverpool were knocked out in the round-of-16 by Paris Saint-Germain last month, and were outplayed by the Parisians for the majority in the process, Aston Villa put up more of a fight.

The Villans overturned a 2-0 deficit to beat PSG 3-2 at Villa Park on Tuesday night, and came within a whisker of forcing extra-time.

While they ultimately exited 5-4 on aggregate, PSG boss Luis Enrique paid tribute to Villa as he admitted he had never seen his own side dominated by an opponent as much as they had been by Unai Emery’s men.

“An exceptional start to the match but the end of the first half did not please me at all,” he said.

The opponent was intense because they had to equalise.”
