Luis Suarez has always been a somewhat controversial character in football.
The Uruguayan is yet to hang up his boots, currently plying his trade with Inter Miami in the MLS, but he is mostly remembered for his stints with Liverpool and Barcelona.
Whilst he is widely regarded as one of the best strikers football has ever seen, the aggressive side to his game has often divided opinion.
He has always been remarkable on the pitch, but a couple moments have also threatened to overshadow what has been a terrific footballing career.
During the quarterfinals of the South Africa World Cup in 2010, Luis Suarez infamously clawed the ball away from his goal-line after a header that seemed destined for the back of the net from Ghana’s Dominic Adiyiah.
Luis Suarez was immediately sent off as a result, but Uruguay went on to beat Ghana on penalties and Suarez’s crazy celebrations following the result caused widespread outrage.
Fast forward to the 2014 World Cup and Suarez found himself on the wrong side of the law once again as he bit Girogio Chiellini on the shoulder during his sides game against Italy.
Suarez was banned from all football-related activity for four months and was heavily fined.
However, one spat with a former opposition player appears to have stood the test of time.
Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra have never seen eye to eye, a situation not helped by the fact that one is a Liverpool player and one is a Manchester United player.
The discontent between the two originated from a Liverpool home game against United in 2011.
Suarez refusing to shake Evra’s hand at the start of the game heated things up, before a reportedly racist comment by the Uruguayan handed him an eight-game suspension and a £40,000 fine.
Fast forward to 2025, and Patrice Evra has sensationally asked for Luis Suarez to be his first opponent as he steps into a major career-switch.
The former left-back will be heading into the world of MMA as it has been confirmed that he will fight on the Professional Fights League’s PFL Europe 2 card that will take place at the Accor Arena in Paris.
Evra will compete as an amateur against an opponent who is yet to be named and after reportedly training for almost a decade in combat sports, he is ready for this next step.
It seems that Patrice Evra is still bothered by the events of the past, saying:
“They asked who I wanna face.
I said: Luis Suarez.
He can even bite me.”
There’s been no love lost between these two then.
