Luis Suarez and his influence on Liverpool Football Club is undeniable, even years after his departure from Anfield.
The Uruguayan striker, whose blend of technical brilliance and relentless drive captivated fans during his three-year stint (2011–2014), continues to make headlines on Merseyside through his mentorship of current forward Darwin Nunez.
During the 2013/14 season, Suárez delivered one of the most electrifying individual campaigns in Premier League history.
Scoring 31 goals and providing 17 assists, he propelled Liverpool to the brink of their first league title in 24 years, earning both the PFA and FWA Player of the Season awards.
His performances, particularly his four hat-tricks against Norwich City, became the stuff of legend.
And his impact continues to be felt by Darwin Nunez as well.
Since joining Liverpool in 2022, Darwin Núñez has faced intense scrutiny for his erratic finishing and decision-making.
Suarez, now a veteran at Inter Miami, has repeatedly offered public backing to his compatriot – be it through bad goalscoring spells or when he picked up a ban for Uruguay during a brawl at the recent Copa America tournament.
But while the Anfield club is among Europe’s’ elite, it was not always the case in the 21st century, with Suarez joining at a time when the club was not as dominant as it is today.
And, speaking on a KICK stream with streamer Davoo Xeneize, Suarez revealed that he had the chance to join Tottenham back in 2011 – but ended up choosing Anfield due to the likes of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard:
“Dutch football, and Ajax, is where I learned to play technically.
I learnt how to hit left-footed, to position myself, to make headers… I learned a lot of things.”
“When I was leaving Ajax, I had offers from Liverpool and Tottenham on the table… I didn’t think about it and I chose Liverpool,” he said.
“I was a fan of Gerrard and Fernando Torres.
It’s a shame I couldn’t play with Torres, it would have been a dream… I always played on the PlayStation using Fernando Torres.”
It’s fair to say that the Uruyaguan made the correct choice to join Liverpool over Tottenham Hotspurs.
In September 2024, Suarez announced his retirement from international football, concluding a 17-year career with Uruguay?
His final match, a World Cup qualifier against Paraguay, drew an emotional tribute from fans and teammates alike.
