There are not many footballers who walk away from big paydays just to keep doing what they love.
At 36, Andy Carroll is not the star striker he once was, but he’s still playing the game with a commitment that says a lot about him.
A former Liverpool man, Carroll has taken an unusual route.
While others may be chasing final paydays in places like Saudi Arabia or the MLS, Carroll chose to drop down to the fourth tier of French football.
That decision raised eyebrows.
But from a Liverpool perspective, there’s something to respect about that.
Carroll’s spell at Anfield may have been short, but he remains a player who gave his all whenever fit.
Now, he’s doing the same for a club in crisis.
Girondins de Bordeaux were kicked out of Ligue 2 after going bankrupt last summer.
They lost their professional status and dropped into the amateur ranks.
Most players wouldn’t touch a situation like that.
Carroll did.
Now, new details have emerged on just how far he’s gone to make this move possible.
According to L’Équipe, Carroll is officially a part-time worker at Bordeaux.
He earns just €1,614 gross per month – that’s €1,400 net.
That’s well below the French minimum wage, which is €1,801.80 gross per month.
His wage had initially been estimated at €3,500, then revised to €2,500 based on earlier reports.
But L’Équipe’s investigation into the club’s finances has revealed that the real number is far lower.
Back in October, Carroll had hinted at this reality in an interview with RMC Sport, “I won’t tell you the exact figure but to give you an idea, since I moved here, I rent a pretty little house and my salary is less than my rent.”
“If I joined Bordeaux, it clearly wasn’t for the money.”
“I had offers from elsewhere to play in Saudi Arabia, but that didn’t interest me.”
For Liverpool fans, this version of Andy Carroll is a reminder of the player’s grit.
The goals may have dried up, but the passion hasn’t.
