Several clubs have reportedly reserved the right to claim financial damages against Manchester City if they are found guilty of 115 alleged financial breaches of the Premier League's rules.

The independent hearing into the case began in September and is reportedly expected to last around two months, with the aim for a final verdict to be reached in time for the beginning of the 2025/26 season.

However, The Times reports that a number of Premier League clubs have been advised by lawyers to begin legal proceedings now and reserve the right to seek compensation in case of a guilty verdict.

That's because the 1980 Limitation Act sets a six-year time bar for legal claims for breaches of contract in the UK, with Tuesday (November 5) marking six years since the claims against City were uncovered by German publication Football Leaks in 2018.

It is claimed that if clubs wait until after the verdict to potentially seek compensation, there is a "risk" that any lawsuit could be outdated in accordance with UK law.

If the charges are proven to be true, clubs across the division could miss out on a loss of earnings claims for Premier League titles and/or European places lost at City's expense during the time of the alleged wrongdoing.

In February 2023, the Premier League announced that they had charged City with 115 financial breaches for a nine-year period spanning from 2009 to 2018.

In that time, the Etihad outfit won three Premier League titles, including in the 2013/14 season when they finished ahead of Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool.

The eight-time Premier League winners said they were "surprised" by the charges laid out by the Premier League and would welcome the opportunity to present their "irrefutable evidence" in front of an independent commission at a later date.
