Liverpool look set to end Manchester City’s four-year dominance of the Premier League in May.

City have been relentless in their pursuit of glory, winning an unprecedented four league title’s in a row between 2021 and 2024.

But dominance rarely lasts in English football and Liverpool need just two more points to ensure City can no longer catch them in 2024/25.

Part of the champions’ problem this term has been the fading of captain Kevin De Bruyne, who on Friday announced that he will leave the club at the end of the season.

De Bruyne has been a magnificent player for City and will leave a legacy that lasts far beyond the years he spent at the Etihad Stadium.

But, had things gone the way the Belgian had planned, maybe he would have become a legend at his boyhood club, Liverpool, instead.

Obviously, having spent the past 10 years winning everything with the club, De Bruyne is very much now a City man.

However, rewind to his childhood, and the Belgium international was actually a Liverpool supporter.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES

De Bruyne admitted as much while speaking to the Match of the Day magazine via The Mirror back in 2019.

“I was a Liverpool fan,” he revealed, after footage of the young KDB pledging his allegiance to the Reds had gone viral.

“My family that live in England were all Liverpool supporters so I was, too.

I loved Michael Owen because I was really small like him and quick, too.”

With De Bruyne now set to become a free agent, maybe his camp will be putting in some calls to Anfield in order to fulfil a lifelong dream!

Obviously, there is no chance of De Bruyne ending up at Liverpool this summer.

Even if the 33-year-old did fancy embarking on what may be seen as a betrayal by some City fans, his performances this season have shown that he is no longer up to it.

For the past 10 years De Bruyne has been one of the world’s very best midfielders.

Pep Guardiola and co would not have won what they have won without him as the beating heart.

But, turning 34 this summer, it’s clear that what is left of De Bruyne’s career will be spent in a lesser league.

Perhaps a move to the USA or Saudi Arabia will appeal, but wherever he goes, Liverpool will always be a small part of De Bruyne’s story.
