In a match billed as the Premier League’s title-race litmus test, Liverpool delivered a statement performance at the Etihad on Sunday, defeating Man City 2–0 to not only extend their lead at the summit but also emphatically dismiss any lingering doubts about their ability to handle the pressure of a championship chase.
Arne Slot’s side secured their first league win at the Etihad since November 2015 through a blend of tactical discipline and clinical finishing.
Mohamed Salah’s 14th-minute opener and Dominik Szoboszlai’s 37th-minute strike proved decisive, with Liverpool overcoming City’s 68% possession to claim a landmark victory.
The result leaves Liverpool on 64 points from 27 matches, 11 ahead of second-placed Arsenal (who have a game in hand) and 20 clear of fourth-place City.
Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions, missing injured talisman Erling Haaland, now face an uphill battle to secure Champions League qualification.
Liverpool’s remaining fixtures include just two top-six opponents (Manchester United and Tottenham), while City must still face Arsenal and Aston Villa.
And it seems after the game, one Manchester City new signing admitted that he is not used to playing against the likes of Mohamed Salah
Lewis Steele, writing in the Daily Mail’s Liverpool Confidential, has revealed that new Man City signing Nico Gonzalzes was blown away at Mohamed Salah’s world-class ability.

The Cityzens completed the signing of midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Porto for a reported fee of £50 million.
The 23-year-old Spaniard joined City on a four-and-a-half-year contract, becoming the club’s fourth signing of the January transfer window.
Gonzalez, a product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, spent 18 months at Porto before making the move to the Etihad Stadium.
Speaking in the mixed-media zone at the Etihad on Sunday in the aftermath of the game, the former Porto and La Masia graduate said:
“I’ve just arrived, I’m not used to playing against players of the quality like Salah,” he said.
“I think he already has 30 goals and it’s tough to play against players like this.”
Despite Salah’s consistency—238 goals in 374 Liverpool appearances—the Ballon d’Or has eluded him.
His best finish (5th in 2019) coincided with Liverpool’s Champions League triumph
