Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool are just three of the Premier League sides who could be left behind by FIFA’s new transfer window rule change.
It comes ahead of the new-look FIFA Club World Cup, which will take place in its new guise for the first time between June and July this year.
By virtue of their recent Champions League triumphs, Manchester City and Chelsea have earned qualification for the tournament, which includes 32 of the world’s best clubs.
And according to new plans announced by FIFA, an ‘interim transfer window’ could be introduced for clubs competing in the tournament, which would allow them to sign players and extend contracts outside of the traditional registration period.
The tournament is set to begin on June 14, with the proposed interim transfer window being touted to run for 10 days after opening on June 1.
But the Premier League teams who aren’t involved in the revamped Club World Cup - such as United, Liverpool and Arsenal - are believed to be unhappy about the prospect of City and Chelsea having the opportunity to sign players earlier than the rest.
In theory, it would allow City or Chelsea to snatch the currently out-of-contract Salah from Liverpool and play him in the Club World Cup prior to his actual expiration date.
What’s more, as is the case for City, Kevin De Bruyne’s contract with the Blues is currently set to run out midway through the tournament, meaning the new rules could see a short-term extension be agreed upon, which wouldn’t overlap with the registration period for the 2025/26 season.
The disgruntled clubs arguing that they would instead like the domestic window to open earlier, which last year ran from June 14 and August 30.
It’s reported by The Guardian that the Premier League are considering a number of options, one being to open the window alongside the interim Club World Cup market and close it just before the tournament gets underway, somewhat replicating the plans put forward by FIFA.
The tournament is being hosted across 11 separate cities in the United States, with the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain joining City and Chelsea as representatives from UEFA nations.
Proceedings begin with Al Ahly vs Inter Miami on opening night in Miami, with the final pencilled in for July 13.
