Manchester United have held further discussions over the summer signing of Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, according to reports.

And the Red Devils have a secret weapon in their arsenal to fend off heavyweight Premier League competition and address Ruben Amorim's priority position.

United have suffered from a lack of goals this term, with Rasmus Hojlund managing just three in the Premier League after inheriting the No.

9 shirt last summer.

Bruno Fernandes is the only player to have entered double figures for goals this season, netting 16 times in all competitions, with Alejandro Garnacho the next highest on nine.

Amorim is unsurprisingly locked in on a new striker as the centrepiece of his summer rebuild, and Delap is a prominent name in the frame.

According to Mail Sport, United have internally discussed the 22-year-old further ahead of a potential swoop at the end of the campaign.

Delap has a release clause worth around £40million in the likely event that Ipswich Town suffer instant relegation to the Championship.

It's claimed that club chiefs consider the England Under-21 international better value than other options, including Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike.

The Bundesliga club are said to value Ekitike in the region of £70m.

Alternatives, including Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko, will also demand a higher fee than £40m.

United don't have a clear path to Delap, who has plundered 10 Premier League goals for Kieran McKenna's struggling side this season.

The report adds that Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle United and his former club, Manchester City, have also shown interest in a deal.

Delap left City for Portman Road last summer in a switch worth up to £20m, and the Etihad Stadium outfit have a buyback option, which could complicate United's hopes.

However, United technical director Jason Wilcox is playing a pivotal role in the club's recruitment with Christopher Vivell.

And he already has a good relationship with Delap from his time in City's academy, which could work in his new employers' favour.

Victor Osimhen is also thought to be on United's radar amid an impressive season on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, who he is widely expected to leave permanently this summer.

Alejandro Garnacho was strongly linked to Napoli in the January transfer window and could potentially be involved in a swap deal.

United won't know their summer budget until they learn whether they will compete in the Champions League next term by winning the Europa League.
