Dwight Yorke has urged Manchester United to launch an incredible swoop for Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold if Arne Slot's reign at Anfield suffers an underwhelming start.

The Old Trafford icon has raised the possibility of the unlikely transfer ahead of Slot's daunting task to succeed Jurgen Klopp in the dugout.

It goes without saying that Alexander-Arnold to United would be one of the biggest transfer shocks in Premier League history.

But Yorke is no stranger to urging his former club to pursue their rivals' prized assets, having previously tipped Leroy Sane to land in M16 from Manchester City before he joined Bayern Munich.

And he has laid out his latest transfer wish, pushing United to take the opportunity if Alexander-Arnold becomes unsettled at his boyhood club.

"I'm not sure Trent Alexander-Arnold would want to leave Liverpool as it's his boyhood club," Yorke told Best Online Poker Sites.

"I'm not sure Trent Alexander-Arnold would want to leave Liverpool as it's his boyhood club, but Liverpool will be under transition now Jurgen Klopp has left.

Maybe Alexander-Arnold can evolve as a midfielder under Slot.

"This could be another opportunity where, if Liverpool don't perform under Slot and Alexander-Arnold becomes unhappy, Man United should do everything they can to sign him.

"I was the first person to suggest that Man United should have signed Leroy Sane started to become frustrated at Man City when he was on the bench frequently; now he's one of the best players in Germany.

"Alexander-Arnold may have a similar opportunity which Man United should pounce on.

"Obviously, there is history between the clubs and Alexander-Arnold will know that as an Englishman, but it can be an opportunity to look out for."

Despite Yorke's suggestion, the prospect of Alexander-Arnold walking away from Merseyside in favour of Manchester is almost certainly a non-starter.

In a summer where United are expected to address multiple positions at the start of INEOS' regime, right-back is not likely to be one of them.

Diogo Dalot established himself as Erik ten Hag's first-choice right-back ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka last season.

The Portugal international will retain his starting berth next term, while Wan-Bissaka is thought to be in the shop window ahead of a potential exit.

United will prioritise a new centre-back, midfielder and striker above anything else in the coming months.

The Red Devils have also been linked with moves for a new left-back and winger, although they may depend on other departures.
