Antony has shockingly revealed that he was on the brink of joining Liverpool, potentially stepping into Mohamed Salah's boots, just before his eventual transfer to Manchester United.
Antony, who had clinched his second Eredivisie title with Ajax at 22, later saw his path take a dramatic turn when United, under newly appointed former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag, forked out an eye-watering £86million for him - a move that turned sour after two-and-a-half years of struggles at Old Trafford, culminating in a loan to Real Betis this January.
Yet, things could have panned out quite differently for Antony if Liverpool had acted on their initial interest.
In a conversation with Arab news platform Kooora, the 25-year-old explained: "I was very close to signing for Liverpool, but you never know what would have happened.
In the end, I went to Manchester and had great moments there, and that was a good choice as well."
Antony went on to speak about the player he almost succeeded, saying: "Salah is an amazing player and has been doing great things for a long time.
I don't know if he is the best in the world currently, but he is definitely among the best and is a strong contender for the Ballon d'Or."
The winger has hit the ground running in Spain with three goals and two assists in his opening six matches.
Antony himself has shared mixed feelings about the future: "I am very happy here, but I do not know what will happen in the future.
"I always say that I enjoy every day, with the club, the city, everything, and I give my best for the team.
