Manchester City might be in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer.
There are signs that change could be coming to the Etihad.
Ederson has not been at his best this season.
There’s talk about off-field issues affecting his form.
City do have Stefan Ortega, but some feel he might not be enough if Ederson leaves.
The big question now is who steps in.
Replacing a top goalkeeper is never easy.
City are a team that plays with risk.
But there’s one goalkeeper who has done it quietly over the years.
He hasn’t always been the first choice, but when he’s played, he’s delivered.
Former Liverpool and Man City goalkeeper David James believes City should seriously consider Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher.
Speaking to Prime Casino via Goal, James said, “Yeah, I think for Ederson, if you go back to last season, maybe the season before even, Ali and Eddie for me were the top two goalkeepers around, without question.”
“I think he’s had a difficult season.
I think that’s fair to say.”
“A lot of off-field issues perhaps from the beginning of the season, which has been a bit of a legacy throughout the season.
He seems happy, maybe that’s because he’s getting his assist now.”
James didn’t stop there.
He spoke highly of Kelleher, saying, “But even the likes of Caoimhin Kelleher could be a suitable replacement if Pep Guardiola was looking to replace Eddie because Caoimhín, in his role for Liverpool, is essentially doing everything that Eddie does for Manchester City.”
“Caoimhín’s got that calmness about him.
He knows how to get into those positions to win trophies.”
“He’s been involved in penalty shootouts, all the stuff that you want from a top goalkeeper.”
James added, “If Liverpool needed to move one goalkeeper on, and Man City might need one.”
“You know, you probably wouldn’t even have to relocate because it’s only 45 minutes down the road.
But with the arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili, his time at Anfield might be up.
From Liverpool’s view, letting him go would be tough.
But if the right offer comes in, and with Alisson still first-choice, a move could make sense.
West Ham United are reportedly interested too.
But now, with City possibly looking, things could get interesting.
