Manchester City are making moves to reinforce their squad in the January transfer window.
Reports show that they are now eyeing a midfielder to help them recover from a difficult season.
The Premier League champions have been struggling without Rodri, who is out for the season with a knee injury.
City’s midfield has lacked the creativity and control that has made them so dominant in recent years.
To address this, City are targeting a flexible central midfielder, someone who can bring dynamism and vision to their engine room.
While Manchester City are keen on a number of targets, one name in particular stands out.
This player has previously been linked with Liverpool, who have also expressed interest in him.
It’s not the first time that Manchester City has been linked with a player on Liverpool’s radar.
This was evident in the Martin Zubimendi case, but now the player in question is not Martin Zubimendi.
It’s a youngster making huge strides in the Bundesliga.
Manchester City want to sign another former Liverpool target
As per The Times, City are interested in 21-year-old Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen.
Wirtz has enjoyed a sensational start to the 2024-25 season, scoring five goals in the Bundesliga and adding five more in the Champions League.
City are keen admirers of Wirtz, viewing him as the ideal addition to their midfield.
However, Leverkusen are not willing to let him go in January, and City’s task will be challenging.
Wirtz’s agent, Volker Struth, has a strong relationship with Real Madrid, which could be a significant hurdle for City.
Real Madrid are also interested in signing the young German, especially with a potential managerial change that could bring Xabi Alonso to Madrid.
Alonso, who coached Wirtz at Leverkusen, has a good relationship with the player.
This situation is complicated further by the fact that Liverpool had previously targeted Wirtz before he signed with Struth’s agency.
City, however, are hoping that their interest in January will be enough to land the midfielder.
Despite this, they also have other options, including Bruno Guimaraes and Martín Zubimendi, who Liverpool made a move for in the summer, but fell through, should Wirtz prove unattainable.
For now, it looks like the battle for Wirtz could heat up between Manchester City and Real Madrid, with Liverpool watching closely from the sidelines.
