Manchester United and their 2024/25 campaign has been nothing short of disastrous, with the Red Devils languishing in 12th place and in the second half of the table approaching February.
Amorim’s appointment at Old Trafford comes with a touch of irony, as he was briefly considered for the Liverpool job before the Merseyside club opted for Arne Slot.
Liverpool’s decision to pass on Amorim in favor of Slot has proven to be a correct choice – although the Dutchman inherited a ship that needed a few tweaks while his Portuguese counterpart inherited one full of holes and already sinking.
His preferred 3-4-3 formation, which was reportedly a sticking point during Liverpool’s assessment of him, has failed to yield positive results at Old Trafford.
United’s attack has been particularly toothless, with the team struggling to create clear-cut chances and convert opportunities.
But according to reports, the former Sporting Lisbon boss is looking to the transfer market to fix the issues plaguing his side so far this season.
Manchester United agree terms for Patrick Dorgu
Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Lecce left-back Patrik Dorgu – who has been linked to Anfield for the better part of two years.
Speaking back in 2023, the agent of Dorgu appeared to confirm Liverpool interest, saying:
“He is in the midst of his growth and learning process, so today it is too early to say,” agent Kingsley Ogbodo said.
“What I know is that he has a lot to offer and give.”
“Not only the clubs you mentioned [Liverpool and Manchester City], but also others.”
“There is a lot of interest in Patrick and that doesn’t surprise me.”
But with United’s more pressing need for a left wing-back signing, it seems the Red Devils are ready to give their new manager what he needs.
Taking to X, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Man United are far in their negoaitions with the Danish international, reporting:
Manchester United and Lecce are in direct contact again right now for Patrick Dorgu.
“Deal getting closer for €36/37m package and parties still confident to get the agreement done.”
“Dorgu wants the move, five-year deal ready at Man United — agreed also on agents’ side.”
While it’s unlikely Liverpool hijack this transfer, the Reds themselves have reportedly already identified a left-back signing of their own.
