Whether it be aggressive briefing on under-valued bids for opposing players, publicly pressuring rivals to release members of staff or begging the Government to do up a leaky roof, the new United owner is desperate to be seen as a serious player.

And with new coaches arriving and transfer targets being eyed, changes are clearly being lined up as Manchester United look to improve on a terrible Premier League campaign that saw them finish eighth.

All change, that is, except for the manager.

After a three-week review into Erik ten Hag's position as manager, including talks with Thomas Tuchel in France, the Dutchman was finally told he could keep his job after leading United to the FA Cup.

He's since seen several of his key coaches removed with Benni McCarthy and Richard Hartis out and assistant boss Mitchell van der Gaag possibly following them.

In have come club legend Ruud van Nistlerooy, Rene Hake and Jelle ten Rouwelaar, all Ineos appointments, as Ten Haag's backroom team is reshaped for the coming season.

So where do Liverpool come in?

Well for Manchester United 2024, see Liverpool 2015, when Fenway Sports Group were left with a similar decision to make following a season of struggle that culminated in an embarrassing 6-1 thrashing at Stoke City as Steven Gerrard's Reds career ended with a whimper.

Brendan Rodgers was under intense pressure as his reign unravelled spectacularly following a title challenge in 2014.

In came a club legend in Gary McAllister while Rodgers recruited Sean O'Driscoll from England under-19s.

Liverpool also promoted a certain Pep Lijnders from his position at the Academy and Rodgers was pleased with the changes.

Indeed, it was little wonder, with the Northern Irishman clinging to his job following a meeting with Liverpool chairman Tom Werner as his coaching staff paid the price.

It felt as though Liverpool were ignoring the root cause of their problems and FSG would soon find that out first hand when, despite a more solid start to the season - the Reds returned to Stoke and won 1-0 thanks to a Philippe Coutinho effort - the club found themselves 10th after eight games

And rather than help Rodgers, the removal of his most trusted coaching staff only told the world that FSG weren't happy with the work done at Liverpool and undermined the Northern Irishman, who was forced to shoulder the decision and defend it in public.

What sort of message did it send to the players on the training ground?

You can't imagine that those Manchester United players who have doubter Ten Hag's methods - and there have clearly been a few - will be hugely won over by the recent decisions.

The Reds subsequently won just three of their opening eight games in 2015/16, with defeats at Man United and at home to West Ham laying bare the problems that still existed at the club.

It led to FSG taking drastic measures in October as Rodgers was finally removed from his position and Jurgen Klopp took over.

Short-term measures McAllister and O'Driscoll were immediately removed from their roles with Lijnders establishing himself as a key lieutenant under the German.

FSG could consider it a harsh lesson as they were forced to show the ruthless streak that saw them remove the unpopular Roy Hodgson within months of buying the club and then legend Sir Kenny Dalglish after a poor league finish, despite a season that saw the Reds make it to two cup finals.

The learning curve was complete for Liverpool's American owners and Rodgers' removal and the swift appointment of the sought after Klopp was a clear sign of progress.

It's why Ratcliffe and Ineos may soon discover their façade as a more serious football administrator than the unpopular previous regime is not enough to affect a real change of fortunes on the pitch for United.

And while Liverpool step into the unknown with new head coach Arne Slot taking over from Klopp this year, FSG still appear the more serious players after a quiet search for a new boss brought in the Dutchman and constructed his new backroom team.

Slot may have huge shows to fill at Anfield but he can be sure that the real pressure will be on his compatriot down the East Lancs Road.
