It appears Manchester United have stolen the march on Liverpool regarding one of the club’s attacking targets.

The Red Devils and Liverpool, two of the most successful clubs in English football, have often battled for supremacy on the field and off the field.

The Reds have beaten their Manchester rivals to some of their targets in recent years, with Cody Gakpo one of the most recent players who chose Anfield over a move to Old Trafford.

“It was the summer before.

I was in contact with the club and the manager – he’s Dutch, so I spoke to him as well,” Gakpo recalled.

“At the end of the day, it fell through, that’s it, and in the winter Liverpool came.

It was the best decision for me.”

Manchester United have had their fair share of successes over Liverpool, too, with recent signings Patrick Dorgu and Leny Yoro both tentatively linked with moves to Liverpool before joining Ruben Amorim’s side.

It appears another player, who has been linked to Liverpool, has chosen Old Trafford.

The player in question is Matheu Cunha.

He appears to be keen on a move this summer, and football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed he is currently on the verge of agreeing a move to Manchester United.

“Manchester United are leading the race to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves as negotiations are ongoing,” Romano wrote on X.

“Personal terms are being discussed, as Man Utd are aware of more clubs keen + £62.5m release clause available.

If indeed Liverpool’s interest in Cunha was serious, then it will be truly surprising from a sporting perspective that the Brazilian will choose Man United over Arne Slot’s side.

The Reds are currently in more stable shape than their rivals, and have been over the last eight years or so.

As such, they are the more attractive prospect for players right now, especially considering Ruben Amorim’s side appears not to have found an identity yet.

Perhaps Liverpool never made concrete steps to sign Cunha, or the Brazilian chose to go to Old Trafford where he is sure he is an upgrade to all of the club’s current attackers.
