Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva has discussed his side’s poor form this season ahead of their weekend clash against Liverpool.
Pep Guardiola’s side welcome Liverpool to the Etihad, sitting fourth in the Premier League standings, 17 points adrift of Arne Slot’s men.
They come into the tie on the back of a 3-1 loss, which confirmed their exit from the Champions League.
It was their earliest Champions League elimination since the 2012-13 campaign, and there is now a chance that City will end the season trophyless, with the FA Cup the only competition they still have a high chance to win.
For a team that won its fourth straight title last season and recently won a historic treble, its current struggles are a huge shock to the footballing world.
Injuries have plagued City this season, though.
They lost Ballon d’Or award winner Rodri to a right ACL injury in September and could be without as many as seven players for their game against Liverpool.
What Silva said about Manchester City struggles
However, discussing his side’s form and struggles after City’s loss to Real Madrid on Wednesday, Silva refused to blame injuries alone for his team’s poor performances, admitting that the poor form seems ‘incomprehensible’ to him.
“It [the slump] seems incomprehensible to me, too,” the Portugal international told ESPN.
“I don’t have the right answer.
Of course, not just the injuries, that’s no excuse.
The levels of calm and confidence are not the same this season.
The way the team plays is not the same, and we have to get it back as quickly as possible.”
The 30-year-old also admitted that his side are out of the Premier League title race despite still having more than a dozen games to play.
“There are things that we can no longer recover: the Champions League and winning the Premier League?
We’re out of the two most important competitions, so we’re very, very sad,” he added.
“I’m sure that with some changes that the club will probably make at the end of the season because that’s how it is when you don’t win in football, we will try to bring this club back to the level it should be at.”
