Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa has commented on Darwin Nunez and his performances for his nation this international break.
The 25-year-old’s recent performance for Uruguay against Argentina in the World Cup qualifier was disappointing.
The Liverpool striker struggled to make an impact in the match, which Uruguay lost 1-0 to Argentina.
He was largely neutralized by the Argentine defense, particularly veteran Nicolas Otamendi6.
His ineffectiveness was underscored by his substitution in the 72nd minute.
The Uruguayan media rated Nunez’s performance 4/10, noting that he “couldn’t get a clear ball to finish off the Argentine goalkeeper.”
While some outlets praised his defensive efforts and work rate, they also highlighted the lack of support he received from his teammates.
This performance continues to be a challenging season for Nunez, who has been struggling to form at both the club and international levels.
With Liverpool, he has scored just seven goals in 40 appearances this season, putting him on track for his worst goalscoring season in Europe.
Interestingly, Bielsa believes that it is his fault that Nunez is misfiring for his nation, with the former Leeds manager saying via ESPN:
“I saw Darwin with a lot of enthusiasm, with a lot of willingness and excitement.
“If the coach is looking for a team that damages when attacking, but doesn’t create scoring chances, the responsibility can’t fall on the individuals, but rather on my failure to get the combination of such outstanding players to create the differences we struggle to create.”
The Uruguay manager took responsibility for the loss against Argentina, adding:
“I reaffirm my responsibility in moments when Uruguay loses, because our team is clearly designed to defend without stopping attacking, and to attack without stopping defending, and it’s prepared to unbalance.”
“Individuals speak for themselves: if a team has Darwin, [Giorgian] De Arrascaeta, [Federico] Valverde, [Rodrigo] Bentancur, [Ronald] Araujo himself, full-backs like [Nihitan] Nández with a lot of potential.”
The 2024/2025 season has proven to be another frustrating chapter in Nunez’s Liverpool career.
Despite his £85m price tag, the striker has managed just seven goals and five assists across all competitions?
His struggle for consistent playing time is evident with only 16 starts from his 35 appearances while being used as a substitute in 23 matches.
With Saudi suitors circling and Liverpool seemingly open to recouping funds, Nunez certainly seems to be one to watch in the coming summer window.
