Former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has explained why he believes it’s the right time for Slovakia to face England at Euro 2024.
The Three Lions comfortably topped Group C, remaining unbeaten against Serbia, Denmark, and Slovenia, although they may not have reached their peak performance level.
Manager Gareth Southgate appears to be honing the blend of talent among his squad effectively.
Slovakia, on the other hand, pose a challenge after their surprising 1-0 victory over Belgium in Group E.
A tense draw against Romania on matchday three secured their advancement, fueling hopes within Francesco Calzona’s squad of achieving their first quarter-final appearance at a major tournament since Slovakia gained independence in 1993.
What did Martin Skrtel say?
Martin Skrtel, who played at Anfield from 2008 to 2016, has expressed his dissatisfaction with England’s performance so far at Euro 2024.
He believes this presents an opportune moment for Slovakia to face Gareth Southgate’s team.
Slovakia, optimistic about their prospects, are gearing up to challenge England, a team they have never defeated before.
“I watched two games against Denmark and Slovenia and I’ve got to say I was surprised and also a little bit disappointed,” said Skrtel, who represented Slovakia 104 times and featured in two major tournaments.
“I expected a little bit more from England’s side and I think they could do much, much better.
“We know they’re quality and the tournament is just starting now because it’s about the one game at the moment.
“It’s going to be very difficult for us but if I can say this is the right moment for us to play against England because our team are performing really well and full of confidence.
“If we can (ever) beat England, it would be this time.”
The Slovakian camp has embraced a theme of optimism after narrowly advancing from Group E in third place.
