Michael Owen suggests 'special talent' will leave Liverpool this summer after spotting worrying sign

The future of Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool has yet to be decided.

The full-back is out of contract at the end of the season and there has been no sign of a new deal being offered to the Reds’ vice-captain.

Full focus from everyone at Liverpool will be on winning the Premier League title at present, however, planning for the summer will have got underway as the Merseyside club look to remain on top next season.

Alexander-Arnold is a star Liverpool will not want to lose given his talent, age, and what he means to the fanbase.

The feeling on Merseyside is that the 26-year-olf could seek a new challenge this summer and that is a view Michael Owen shares after noticing something about the situation.

Real Madrid are heavily pursuing Alexander-Arnold and that is a feeling Owen knows well after the former striker left Anfield in 2004 for the La Liga giants.

The pundit knows the lure of the Madrid-based club and that’s why he thinks the full-back will leave the Premier League leaders this summer, while also admitting that it is worrying that no contract has been agreed this late into the 2024/25 campaign.

“Trent knows that he is going to win trophies, but it’s about whether he wants to go and live in a new country with other great players and have great weather, eat great food and speak a different language,” Owen said via the Liverpool Echo.

“You’d probably say Real Madrid on league titles as there is less competition, but you’d probably say Liverpool are the better team as things stand.

“My gut feeling is that he will go because otherwise why would it be getting so late in the day to arrange a new contract?

“He will always have that Liver bird ingrained in his heart just like I did, just like [Steve] McManaman did, just like Jamie Carragher and Robbie Fowler and Steven Gerrard.

“Once you’ve been at the club for so long and come through the ranks your feelings will never change but he’s got a life to live and maybe he wants a change.

“But whether he does or not, my view on him won’t be tainted one way or the other and it shouldn’t for anybody else either.”

Owen believes Alexander-Arnold is a ‘special talent‘ and will not want to see the 26-year-old leave Liverpool, however, his view on the England international has not changed in months.

Liverpool rejected Real Madrid’s approach for Alexander-Arnold in December as the La Liga club made their interest in the full-back public.

Like many others, Owen did not like the signs around this move as it hinted that some talks had gone on behind the scenes.

The former Liverpool star believes that Alexander-Arnold will leave the Reds now and also back then as the pundit gave some insight into the tactics at play from the Spanish club.

Alexander-Arnold may have dropped hints regarding his Liverpool future already as the right-back continues to perform for Arne Slot as the Reds push for titles.

Winning a Premier League title would be an incredible way for the 26-year-old to end his Liverpool career, which is the most likely outcome at present.
