Michael Owen thinks Liverpool could have a secret weapon against "team to beat" Real Madrid in the Champions League this season.

The Reds face off against the La Liga giants as one of their eight fixtures in the newly revamped competition for the 2024-25 campaign, locking horns with the Spanish outfit for the seventh time in just six years when it comes to Anfield in November.

Liverpool has failed to win a single one of those meetings, with its last victory coming back in 2009, and has fallen to defeat in six of those clashes - most notably the 2018 and 2022 Champions League finals in Kyiv and Paris.

But under a new manager in Arne Slot, the Reds have a fresh opportunity to finally get one over Carlo Ancelotti's side when they come face-to-face in two months' time - and Owen believes his former club can use its 'secret weapon' to earn all three points.

However, Real Madrid won't relish playing Liverpool, they won't enjoy going to Anfield and playing Liverpool.

Michael Owen has called on Liverpool to make Anfield a fortress for its clash with Real Madrid in November.

"But you have to say that Madrid are the favorites going into it, but I don't think Madrid will be relishing playing City or Liverpool at the moment

So I think it'll be a good tournament."

For Owen, Liverpool can - and has to - use Anfield as a fortress when Los Blancos come to town on November 27, just like it did for that famous 4-0 victory in the second leg of their last 16 clash in 2009, when goals from Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard (2) and Andrea Dossena secured a memorable win for the Reds.

Since then, Liverpool has failed to beat Real Madrid at Anfield in three attempts (2014, 2021 and 2023), losing by an aggregate score of 8-2 on its own turf, having drawn just one of those games

Real Madrid have always struggled when playing Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, failing to win a single one of its six games there in 90 minutes, and Liverpool must take encouragement from that if it wants to achieve the same success.

By the time the two sides meet, they will have played four games each in the new league phase of the competition, meaning a lot could be on the line if both are hoping to make it through to the knockout stages of the competition.

Liverpool kicks off its Champions League campaign with a trip to face AC Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday, before Bologna and Bayer Leverkusen visit Anfield either side of an away day to RB Leipzig in Germany in October.
