Arsenal delivered one of the most stunning European displays in their history on Tuesday night, defeating defending champions Real Madrid 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium in their Champions League quarter-final first leg.

The North London side put themselves in pole position to reach their first Champions League semi-final since 2009 with a performance that will live long in the memory of the Emirates faithful.

After a goalless first half in which Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced several outstanding saves, Arsenal broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion through Declan Rice.

The England international, who had never previously scored a direct free-kick at senior level, delivered two stunning set-piece goals in the second half.

While Arsenal fans are rightfully celebrating their comprehensive victory, the potential fixture pile-up in the coming weeks could have significant implications for their Premier League campaign.

Should Arsenal overcome Real Madrid in the second leg, they will face either Aston Villa or Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals, with one leg falling in the week preceding their crucial Premier League clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

Liverpool will host Arsenal at 4:30pm BST on Sunday, May 11, in what could be a decisive fixture in the title picture.

The Reds currently hold a commanding position in the Premier League, sitting 11 points clear of Arsenal, albeit having played one game more.

Significantly, Liverpool will play seven of their final 11 Premier League games at Anfield, including the Arsenal fixture.

This home advantage, coupled with potentially fresher players given Arsenal’s European commitments, could give Arne Slot’s side a crucial edge as they look to secure the Premier League title before the Gunners’ visit.

But it was not all positive for the Gunners on the night.

Bukayo Saka, who was instrumental in winning both free-kicks from which Rice scored6, was substituted in the 74th minute and replaced by Leandro Trossard.

Then two-goal hero Declan Rice left the field just six minutes after Saka, replaced by Kieran Tierney with what appeared to be a foot problem.

Speaking after the game, Mikel Arteta said on the pair:

“I think Dec had an issue with his foot, I don’t know if it was a tackle or what it was, and Bukayo was after he got tackled on the foul, I think he had a knock and he had to go.”

However, he was quick to add that his side were still focused on domestic matters and their upcoming Premier League clash vs Brentford at the Emirates on Saturday:

“They were talking about it immediately.

You know, great, enjoy it, and now let’s prepare for Saturday very well, and then we’ll have the time to prepare for the next challenge in Madrid?

But they are all very excited.”
