Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League is under pressure.
Arsenal are pushing.
The Gunners’ 2-0 win over Leicester City means the gap is now just four points.
But it could go back to seven if Liverpool beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.
Arne Slot’s side have been in control for most of the season.
But things haven’t been perfect.
They have dropped points in three of their six league games this year.
The latest was a frustrating 2-2 draw against Everton, where James Tarkowski equalized in the 98th minute.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are dealing with their own problems.
Their squad is stretched.
First-choice striker Kai Havertz is out for the season.
Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Gabriel Jesus are also sidelined.
And yet, they keep finding ways to win.
Against Leicester, Arsenal struggled at first.
The home side looked dangerous on the counter.
But in the second half, Mikel Merino stepped up.
The midfielder, playing as a makeshift striker, scored twice late in the game to secure all three points.
Mikel Arteta ‘issues warning’ to Liverpool as Arsenal close Gap in title race
After the match, Arteta made it clear that Arsenal are not backing down.
He knows Liverpool are still in control, but he believes his side can push them all the way.
“Yes, and it was [important] for us as well,” Arteta said when asked if their win put pressure on Liverpool.
He continued, “Everything that happened in the last few days, it was a lot of noise to show how much we want it, because regardless of what happens, we’re going to really go for it, that we believe for the resources that we have and the quality of our players and still adapt and be competitive and still win a lot of football matches.”
Arteta also praised his team’s resilience.
He admitted Arsenal struggled in the first half but was pleased with their response after the break.
“A very tough match – the first half, especially the first 20-25 minutes, we struggled to get certain momentum because we did a lot of simple things very wrong, giving a lot of balls away and they were really threatening,” he explained.
“But, in the second half, it was very different.”
“We had much more urgency, better intentions, better executions, and then you can sense that the game was going in the direction that it had to go.”
Arteta also highlighted a key moment when Leicester almost took the lead.
“Saying that, there’s a moment where we give the ball away in the middle of the park, the space is opening on the counter and Myles [Lewis-Skelley] has to make a magic touch to prevent the goal and at the other end, that’s when we’re scoring the goal with the subs.”
“They were brilliant, and Mikel [Merino] obviously made a huge impact to score the two goals.”
Liverpool remain in control.
But Arsenal are not going away.
Arteta’s message is clear: they still believe.
Liverpool has the next move.
They host Wolves at Anfield today at 14:00GMT.
