The social media post of him on the exercise bike was not necessarily anything out of the ordinary for Salah and the post-match routines that help keep him at the cutting edge of the game, but the fact it was undertaken so soon after such a sizable step forward in Liverpool's aim to become Premier League champions was a brief snapshot into the professionalism that continues to underpin one of the great seasons in English football history.

"What Mohamed Salah is doing for Liverpool season in and season out is ridiculous, it's mindblowing," says Daniel Sturridge, who was Salah's team-mate when the Reds lifted the Champions League in Madrid nearly six years ago.

The former Chelsea winger has made no secret of his determination to end this season as a Premier League winner for the second time but that inevitably has a knock-on effect for debates around the Ballon d'Or, which was last won by a Reds player in 2001, when Michael Owen picked it up to be crowned the European footballer of the year.

Unsurprisingly given his form, odds have tumbled on Salah being the 2025 Ballon d'Or recipient but a strong showing in the Champions League will perhaps be needed to furnish his claims further, even if he does end the term as a domestic title winner.

Perhaps, though, the glory of a second league title at Anfield will leave something more lasting as part of Salah's legacy than a one-off Ballon d'Or crowning would.

It's a prospect Salah has made few bones about, telling Sky Sports in January: "In my interviews over the last seven or eight years, I always say [I want to win the] Champions League.
